Cancer is on the rise in younger men, including prostate cancer and bowel cancer, and it's even affecting fit men who don't smoke and have no family history.

I'm 49, so this one's personal. I explain why I'm booking a health screening before 50, and why the warning signs I found in 2024 mean I'll never ignore my gut again.

In this episode:

  • Why prostate and bowel cancer are becoming more common in men under 50
  • The research-backed risk factors worth checking in your own life: alcohol, carrying extra weight around your middle, sitting all day, ultra-processed and sugary foods, and a high intake of red and processed meat
  • My story: the dark, tarry stools and blood that sent me to the doctor in 2024
  • The two-second life check every man should do after going to the toilet
  • A mate from my Army days who ignored the warning signs, and why getting checked beats pride every time
  • Why tracking your symptoms in an IBS journal leads to a better diagnosis
  • How to walk into your GP or doctor's appointment prepared, so you get the best outcome possible

Key takeaway: dark red or black, tar-like stool can be a sign of bleeding higher up the gut and should always be checked by a doctor. Bright red blood is often piles, but any bleeding is worth getting looked at. You're not wasting anyone's time.

Whether you've been diagnosed with IBS, you're living with gut symptoms you haven't had checked, or you're a man approaching 50, this episode is your nudge to take control of your health. Look after your body. It's the only place you have to live.
